BeBe Winans asked to educate Morgan Wallen over racist comments
Gospel legend BeBe Winans has been asked to speak with country singer Morgan Wallen, after a controversial video of him circulated online earlier this month.
Wallen was seen making racist comments in the video - since it was leaked, many people and businesses associated with the country singer cut ties with him.
BMI, a music rights group, has said that by law they cannot drop Wallen from their business - so, they’ve asked BMI advisor Winans to step in and speak with Wallen. Their hope is that the conversation will educate Wallen and show him how to become a more accepting person.
In a recent statement about the incident, BMI wrote: “BMI condemns the hateful and offensive racial slur recently used by Morgan Wallen.
“While unacceptable, under the terms of our consent decree, BMI is mandated to accept all songwriters who want to be a part of our organization.
“We have asked BMI’s Advisor and Gospel legend, BeBe Winans, to reach out to Morgan to help him understand the gravity and impact of his words. Our hope is that BeBe’s outreach can help Morgan become a more inclusive and empathetic person.”
While it’s not been confirmed that the pair have met, Wallen recently posted a video on Instagram, he apologised for his actions and said that he’s spoken to “black organisations, some executives and leaders.”
“The very people I hurt, they had every right to step on my neck while I was down to not show me any grace but they did the exact opposite,” Wallen said.
“They offered me grace and they also paired that with an offer to learn and to grow and I’ll be honest that kindness really inspired me to dig deeper on how to do something about this”.
