Jay Hornz - Love On Top
Jay Hornz is new to me, but the track Love On Top is very familiar – it’s a cover of Beyonce’s hit track but reworked with gospel lyrics. Jay says his friends and family loved the Beyonce track but couldn’t sing it in church… only now they can! It’s a catchy song anyway and Jay has added some trombone (he’s a trombonist!), and with the guest vocalists, has produced a great contemporary slice of gospel.
Robin Small – You’re the Reason
A debut EP from an independent artist with a real earthy soul flava. From the mid-tempo Never Forget (“what you’ve done for me, I’ll never forget”), with its punchy sound, to the popular You’re the Reason with it’s catchy refrain, this is quality gospel soul.
Ty Causey – The Gospel Truth
As someone who used to be one of jazz star Najee’s guest vocalists, you can guess that this album has a smooth R&B feel. I think this is Ty’s 6th album, and there are a couple of particular standouts for me. Spiritual Overflow comes across as a steppers tune, whilstPurpose In My Life has an insistent feel similar to an R Kelly track. Both tracks speak of what happens when we meet Jesus, and that’s The Gospel Truth.
